As a Tampa native, experiencing a satisfying draft and free agency period is not a yearly occurrence. In the past, Bucs draft picks don’t typically pay off in long or short term expectations. However, the Buccaneers front office should now be recognized for utilizing the free agency period, and drafting effectively to the needs of the team.
Before the 2020 draft, Tampa had already acquired the reputable Tom Brady (QB), Rob Gronkowski (TE), and Joe Haeg (T). The Brady and Gronk duo is a solidified threat as shown countlessly with the Patriots. This duo is reliable for first downs, adjoining with an impressive bracket of Bucs receivers including Chris Godwin (WR) and Mike Evans (WR). The addition of veteran Offensive Tackle, Joe Haeg, provides extra protection for the pocket passer, Brady.
If this didn’t already build rapport within the front office, the Bucs traded up in the draft for another offensive tackle, Tristan Wirfs. Two offensive tackle additions, will allow for development of the rookie, Wirfs while maintaining protection from the veteran, Joe Haeg. This is all amongst the offensive side of the ball… On the defensive side, the Bucs reasonably held onto three hot defense playmakers; Shaquil Barrett (OLB), Jason Pierre-Paul (OLB), and Ndamukong Suh (DT). The draft also brought in Antoine Winfield, Jr. (S) and Khalil Davis (DT) both with potential to develop into powerhouse D players.
The Buccaneers Achilles heel in past seasons has majorly been turnovers. Jameis Winston’s 30 for 30, is quite literally thirty touchdowns and thirty interceptions.
The addition of Tom Brady and Rob Gronk should fix the turnover struggles that have nonetheless plagued the team in past seasons. Releasing Winston and adding a proven QB in Brady relieves inconsistency issues. Lastly the additions to the offensive line will hopefully pay off to protect the pocket passer, and maximize the potential of the offense as a whole.
Their 2020-2021 schedule also features five prime time games: Undoubtably due to Brady escaping from the grasp of the Patriots and heading into open arms in Tampa. League fans alike are curious to see how the Buccaneers team will be run with Bruce Arians at head coach, and Brady steering the ship. The offense will be an adjustment for Brady due to the readily available targets, a distinct positive shift from his last few seasons as a Patriot. Contrary to previous years, major props goes out to the front office in Tampa: the Buccaneers have made a hospitable spot for Brady to position himself in for the upcoming season.
“Too often in life, something happens and we blame other people for us not being happy or satisfied or fulfilled. So the point is, we all have choices, and we make the choice to accept people or situations or to not accept situations.”
Tom Brady
